Been a hell of a ride, hasn’t it? Told you guys it would be.
I started this 804 chapter, 3.4 million Chinese character project on May 10, 2014, at SPCNET’s forums, where I was (and still am) a moderator. I had been translating there for many years, and when I saw the popularity of he-man’s Stellar Transformations translation (currently being continued at translationnations.com so go take a look after reading the early chapters here!), I fell in love with the genre, and started on this project by the same author: I Eat Tomatoes, expecting it to be a 4-5 year project, like many of the old SPCNET translations were.
At first, I translated basically whenever I felt like it, which would be incredibly slow by today’s standards. By December 4, 2014, I had translated up to Book 3, Chapter 8 or so, which was roughly 56 chapters in 6.5 months, ~2 chapters a week; an incredible pace by former standards, although still dwarfed by he-man (bless him, wherever he is). At that time, this lovable, paranoid fellow who named himself TheLeecher (and was anything but) PM’d me on SPCNET, insisting that he wanted to send me a nice donation to both thank as well as ‘encourage’ me to translate faster. As TheLeecher was afraid of his name/details being seen, he insisted on sending Amazon gift cards rather than a donation…and I basically said, ‘sure’, and cranked out a bonus chapter or two in order to thank him.
A cycle had begun, and others scrambled to donate as well. This was far more work than I had bargained for…but I did what I promised, and this resulted in a virtuous (albeit exhausting) cycles of more updates=>more viewers=>more donations=>more updates. On Dec. 22, I formally started Wuxiaworld for Coiling Dragon.
And now, 11.5 months and 748 chapters after Dec. 4th, at an average of 15 chapters/week, for eleven months, here we are. At the end of the road.
Coiling Dragon is now complete. For better or worse, it has completely upended the translation scene, in terms of making more people aware of what the work translators do is ‘worth’, in terms of making taking donations socially acceptable (and thus promoting a virtuous cycle of good translators, but alas, also incentivizing bad ones to jump in for a moneygrub), in terms of bringing the Xianxia/Chinese Fantasy webnovels to the forefront, in terms of changing people’s expectations on what a ‘fast’ translation speed is…and more.
But Coiling Dragon didn’t just change the translation scene; it changed my life, both for the better as well as for the worse. As many of you know, I do have a full-time, professional job that I usually spend an average of 50 hours a week on. When you throw in 15 chapters a week on top of that, which averages out to around ~40 hours (earlier chapters took 3-4 hours/chapter, I’m now doing around 2 hours/chapter)…that means I’ve been doing a 90 hour workweek for nearly an entire damn year, and that’s not even counting the amount of time spent on comments, website maintenance, and more.
Honestly…I’m exhausted. Truly, utterly exhausted. Like Tomatoes before him, RWX, too, needs a good rest. The 90 hour workweek for a year has taken its toll; it’s been rewarding in many ways, both financial and personal, but at the same time, it’s been a killer. I’ve had no social life for a year, I’ve gained ~30 lbs from all that sitting in front of a computer, my right hand cramps at the pinky (from continuous stretching to the ‘shift’) button, I haven’t gone out for a date in ages…the list goes on and on. I tried to not make it too apparent to y’all, but for three or four months now, I’ve essentially been running on fumes, with the main thing keeping me going being the fact that the end was nigh. I giggled hysterically a little each time someone suggested that I was trying to ‘stretch it out’. Good lord…hehe.
And now, it’s over. It’s been an incredible, life-changing year. Thank all of you, each and every one of you, for your love, support, comments, readership, and more. Coiling Dragon is over, but I’m sure there will be other projects I will work on in the future (and I will continue helping out on Desolate Era in IEW’s absence), so this, dear friends, is farewell but not goodbye. I will take a good, long, rest…and then I’ll be back.
But for now, it is time to hibernate a bit.

Incredible, I've read the translation on wuxiaworld and I can guarantee that this is an incredible piece of fantasy literature!
So I actually read all the books before writing this so in actually this is just a short review of the whole series. Took me around 10-12 days to read it all, so the books by themselves aren't actually that long!
The story is really much like one that you'd find in any shounen manga these days. If you're not familiar with those, Naruto, One Piece and Bleach are a few of the examples of the more popular ones out there. If you really, really enjoy that kind of story in a book format then just stop...more

Wow. When I read The Legendary moonlight sculptor, I thought nothing can come close to it. But, this book is even more awesome than LMS.
It's about a scion of a dying clan. Once great Baruch clan is at the end of its days. But linley the successor of the clan is highly talented and hard working. This book is an introduction and a captivating one at that. Loved it.

Read the translated series on wuxiaworld.
One of the best wuxia novels, had me awake for most of the nights till the end of the series.
A must read for any fantasy fiction reader.

This may be the book I've enjoyed reading most in my entire life.
On this plane of existence at least.
And I'm only half way through...
It's exactly what I like. Blokey to the Nth degree.
Good boy does good, works his magic socks off and levels up. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. 5 books worth of words later... New world. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. And up. Then strangely it stops.

I am on Book #8 at the moment and think it's time to add a preliminary review for the series. As you can see, I only rated the first few books 3/5 stars. However, this is one of those series that just gets better and better as the story progresses. By Book #6 the conflict and action escalates dramatically and every page becomes a battlefield of heart-pounding adrenaline.

The entire Coiling Dragon series is amazing, and reading it got me through many a break at work. Fantastic universe, excellent characters. Story kept me on the edge of my seat as I read it, wanting to know what came next. Definitely recommend!
The Ring in particular had an excellent set up, introducing some of the major and minor characters that we'd see later on and throughout the series. Looking back, I had no idea what I was getting into when I first started reading it, but I have no regrets....more

This was my introduction to xianxa and wuxia novels. I've got to say it totally converted me. I didn't even know about this whole other genre, which is frickin awesome.
To finish coiling dragon, i went on a mega binge, which lasted me about a month. At the end i finished the 8th book, which is the last one translated. I'm not sure if theres more, but not translated in English or that was the end? Either way it was a great series. I haven't found a slow burn series better than this yet.

Solid 3.5 stars I enjoyed this one very much. If you are familiar with the style of writing from the author Andrew Rowe. You will be familiar with the writing style of Wo Chi Xi Hong Shi. This is similar to LitRPG or as Andrew Rowe likes to call it a progression Fantasy style.
The Book follows a character which starts out very weak but progresses in the book gaining more power, more magic and more prestige. So much fun to read.

When I first started this book, this series in fact, I was really skeptical as this was my first time reading eastern fantasy. I'm obsessed now. This book was the adorable start to Linley's Journey to becoming the most amazing person the history of the Yulan Plane has ever seen. I would really recommend this series if you enjoy getting emotions thrown in your face. These books are a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions. My favourite character in the whole series gets introduced in this book. ;...more

Reads like a poorly translated lite novel. Filled with predictable & over used troupes. MC is overpowered to the point where you don't really care what antics he gets involved in, you know he's just going to OP his way through. Romantic side plot pops out of no where - completely without introduction - impossible to get invested in it.
Overall terrible writing, if I could give this book zero stars, I would.

Great story about a boy growing up and cultivating along side his pet and later his wife as well. One of the few stories where the wife actually travels along with mc as he cultivates and grows stronger.

Great read and my first introduction to the world of Eastern cultivation novels. While starting out a new story you end up with a lot of information, this book does a good job of easing the reader into the world of Linley. I love this entire series and recommend them to anyone.

This was a phenomenal light story. I've never read anything like it. The characters in it are so rich have a good story behind them, and I love to see how the characters will develop

Great book about cultivation and assension. Story is pretty long and dynamic. A solid read and storyline only lacking on imagination about gear and combat. Ending was pretty abrupt.
interesting story with empathetic characters
Among the first xianxia I read, I was utterly drawn into Linley's world and his adventures by this book. A tale of how a weak kid began his road to became powerful.

Loved the book, have read up to book 18 and it just keeps getting better. So hey, here is a theory about book 21 (beware spoilers!)
I MEAN IT THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM BOOKS FARTHER IN THE SERIES READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
you were warned! : So in book 21 Linley becomes a Lower sovereign in each of his divine clones of water, earth, fire and wind. Until now we dont really know how one becomes a sovereign but judging from the fact that there can only be 7 of each element or edict, a posibility is...more

did not realize i could rate this on goodreads nor that this was actually '21 individual books' lolol, i guess my experience was a lil hampered since i read the translated pdf version which was like straight up 5000 pages from wuxia world. the first few hundred pages are kind of 'poorly translated' but its still readable if you think about it from a fob perspective. after that the book becomes much more understandable but the vernacular is 2gud (oh so formidable!). also the fact that the authors...more

So far Ive read a bunch of japanese novels and a few Volumes of a korean web novel, but this was my very first chinese book, and I really liked it.
This is 'Volume 1' of a 21 volumes spanning web novel series, so I didnt expect to see any progress storywise in this volume, but it turned out, there was actually even less story than I expected. That isnt necessarily a bad thing: although the story almost did not progress at all, this was a highly enjoyable introduction to the universe of Coiling Dr...more

Actually what I've read is the translated english version of this book (Coiling Dragon - 'http://www.wuxiaworld.com/cdindex-html/') but netherless it is awsome, awsome, awsome!!! The starting setting, how it developed through the Main Character and interconnections later in the series as the MC goes on the journey to reach the peak of training. it's a little emotional but sometime its funny and adventures, it starts to get your heart throb with all the evolution the story goes through. it l...more
This series should totally have stopped at the 50% mark, but oh well, the second half wasn't that bad. Apart from the Overgod sword arc... that was really bad. And all the arcs where no one really does anything and yet all the problems magically resolve themselves... (What, is this actually real life and not a narrative?) And characters shallower than a puddle with no growth. (Though what'd you expect from a xianxia novel?) At least the ending was epic.
This book definitely is a must read for everyone, readers or non readers!
I am sure you will be spellbound just like me. Inspite of it being included in the category of fantasy, it has the power to motivate you to do the impossible. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 as this book didn't lower my excitement level even for a second.

Not sure if something's lost in translation, but I definitely did not enjoy the writing in this book. The story was okay, but very predictable. Very simplistic plot and overall a book I just wanted to finish and forget. I don't think I'll be trying another Wuxia novel for a long time.
